MORE than 40 Red Cross emergency response volunteers took part in an exercise, held near Crossford.

Excercise Equus volunteers came from Ayrshire, Glasgow, Wigtownshire and South Lanarkshire to take part.

They had to deal with a spectactor stand collapsing at a horse show seriously injuring several people.

The exercise was designed to test the volunteers capabilities to the limit.

Heather Sim, Red Cross service manager, said: "Exercises such as Equus are carefully planned to stretch the volunteers to the limit.

"It helps them to test their reactions and their ability to improvise on the spot. It also enables us to identify areas for improvement and work on them."
