Residents pestered by swarms of flies

And The Extra, while being denied access to the site of the illegal waste tipping at the former dye works in Netherton Road spoke to one local resident living right next door who claimed life has been intolerable.

The woman, who did not wish to be identified said that lorries started arriving in february, but because the waste is contained within a huge 400 foot shed, no one knew what was going on.

Cllr Ian McAlpine Scottish Labour and Co-op councillor for Newton Mearns South has also been contacted by several residents who have flies all over their homes and gardens.

Conservative Cllr Jim Swift said: The site is enormous, the equivalent of two football pitches stacked to the height of the lofty warehouse roof. The amount of illegal waste dumped is very substantial.

“We don’t know what types of waste is there and we therefore cannot just dispose of it, as that would potentially risk people’s health.”

SEPA are now investigating this site but until their investigations have been completed the waste cannot be moved.

SEPA, in a joint statement with East Renfrewshire Council, said: “We are investigating an illegal deposit of waste at Netherplace Works. We are liaising with the landowner regarding measures to reduce flies and limit the potential environmental impact on the site. A time frame for final removal of the waste and an associated site clean-up cannot be confirmed as yet. However, officers are working with other agencies and the council to ensure waste is removed as soon as possible.”
