Residents want to know what’s happening with community hub

Concerned residents have called on council chiefs not to keep them in the dark over plans for a new community hub.

Plans are being taken forward for a new hub in Bishopbriggs.

But the town’s community council says it has not been consulted about the proposals and there is uncertainty over various possible services at the facility.

It’s intended to provide enhanced day care facilities in the community hubs planned for Bishopbriggs, Lennoxtown, Bearsden and Milngavie.

There has also been speculation about using space within the Bishopbriggs hub as an alternative to the Memorial Hall, if proposals for housing on that site are approved.

The location of the hub is uncertain as it tied in with Morrisons plans for the town.

Councillors knocked back the supermarket’s plans for a new store, but this was overturned following an appeal to the Reporter.

However, their application for a petrol station and long stay car park was dismissed following an appeal.

There are concerns that the Bishopbriggs hub could be developed in the same way as the Lennoxtown facility, where it’s claimed decisions were made before the community was consulted.

Margaret McNaughton, planning convener with Bishopbriggs Community Council, said: “The impression that I got from a council document was that the hub was to be led by the community.

“But we are not hearing anything about a community hub whatsoever. It’s a serious concern. Consultation happens before decisions, not decisions before consultation.

“It seems the hub is going to be the answer to everyone’s prayers.”

The community council is writing to the council about the situation.

East Dunbartonshire Council recently revealed that recommendations for a preferred site for Bishopbriggs Community Hub were expected to be made next month.

Ian Shearer, East Dunbartonshire Council’s corporate asset manager, said: “We are currently working on a number of options for Bishopbriggs Community Hub, including designs and costings.

“Once we have these options we will be consulting fully with all of the community.”
