Retro play at Rigside

THE joy of real play was celebrated at Rigside Primary School during a special Retro Playday organised by Primary 5, 6 and 7 pupils and their teacher Nathan Purton.

Local children and their families played together during fun, affordable activities such as skittles, treasure hunt, storytelling, playdough and painting.

P7 pupil Sinead Brennan said: “It was a great project to be part of and great to watch everyone enjoying playing with their parents.”

The day materialised due to the pupils’ work with 21st Century Families, a charity encouraging families to take time away from i-pads, smart phones and games consoles and enjoy real play.

21st Century Families volunteer Lynn Beveridge said: “Children are spending an ever increasing amount of time on screen based activities. We want to give children back their childhood and allow them some time for real play.”

Mr Purton and his class hope the event will inspire parents to try out some of the activities at home and give their children a break from screens.

Parent Louise Johnson said the playday had been “fantastic”, adding: “There were great activities for all ages and some new ideas to take home and enjoy.”
