Riders roar their respect

MORE than 100 bikers descended on the Cumbernauld TA centre on Sunday to honour the heroes of our armed forces.

Known as the Ride of Respect, the group travelled in a motorcade on 70 motorcycles to Maryhill TA centre, raising at least £448 for the charity Afghan Heroes.

The event started two years ago in Wootton Bassett, but this is the first time other meets have been held around the country. Bryn Blaber, organiser of the Cumbernauld event, said: “We had a good turnout and a really good atmosphere. We were over the moon with it.

“We had one motorcycle club, there were five or six of them turned up and they just gave us an envelope with a £100 donation in it. It’s spirit like that which makes it worthwhile.”

Bryn continued: “I had asked them at Maryhill if there would be any chance of a piper but they said they had no musicians there. But when we got there, we were piped through the gates by a military piper - it was a brilliant end to the ride.”

The group expect their final total raised to rise as the money collected from selling merchandise is counted.
