Police and council have joined forces to condemn a letter claiming to be from ‘Euromillions Commonwealth of Nations Online Lottery’.

Kirkintilloch resident Frankie Williamson said: “It’s obviously a scam. Police are aware of it, but please let them know if you receive anything.

“The hoax explains that there was an issue with the lottery and that your numbers have came up.

“Its offer is normally a six-figure sum. Please don’t call the contact number as it’s a very high premium rate.”

Community Policing Inspector Keith Bartlett commented: “I would advise people to ignore unsolicited mail or e-mail informing them they have won money.

“If it seems too good to be true, then it usually is and people should ignore requests to contact premium rate telephone numbers or pay fees to claim winnings.”

East Dunbartonshire Council’s director of governance and regulation, Diane Campbell, added: “The council would warn people to beware of notification received by telephone, post or e-mail, indicating that you have won a major cash prize – especially if to secure the release of the prize, you are required to pay an up-front fee.

“Sometimes the prizes include a series of lottery numbers with a chance to win an expensive vehicle or holidaycruise. Typically, people who send money for these prizes never receive them and, instead, receive only various forms of entry confirmation issued by the con artists.”
