Rising tennis star Maia is all set for Wimbledon

One of the brightest young tennis players to come out of Scotland is hoping to make her mark at the Wimbledon Junior Tennis Championships.

Maia Lumsden (16), from Bearsden, will be competing in the under-18 event, which kicks off next week.

This will be the first time the Bearsden Academy pupil has competed at the event.

A spokesperson for Tennis Scotland, the governing body for the sport in Scotland, said: “Everyone in Scotland involved in tennis is absolutely delighted for her and we are sure she will do everything possible when the tournament comes along.

“This will be the first time Maia has taken part in Junior Wimbledon.

“It is an under-18 event and she is on the right track. She has a huge amount of potential.”

To help Maia with her dream of becoming a top flight player she is being supported by a Bank of Scotland Local Hero grant.

The talented youngster, met East Dunbartonhire MP Jo Swinson and members of staff at the bank’s branch in Kirkintilloch.

Ms Swinson heard about Maia’s training for Wimbledon and the support she is receiving from the bank.

Ms Swinson said: “It was lovely to meet Maia and the Bank of Scotland team in Kirkintilloch to hear about this fantastic initiative to support young local sports stars.

“Maia’s dedication to her sport was inspiring, and I know she is making great sacrifices in pursuit of her goals.

“A grant from the Bank of Scotland can provide an invaluable boost to a young competitor’s career, and it’s great to see it go to a local girl.”

Ms Swinson added: “As a highly regarded local sports star I know Maia’s progress at Junior Wimbledon will be followed closely by many.

“I wish her the best of luck in the tournament and hope she can conjure some of the spirit of last year from Scotland’s most famous tennis player.”

The Local Hero grant scheme was established by the Bank of Scotland to help young competitors juggle the demands of training, work or study commitments.
