Robert Owen Primary pupils send backpacks to Africa

THE children at Lanark’s Robert Owen Memorial Primary School are still a bit too young to go backpacking in Africa so they’ve come to a very happy compromise.

The youngsters are, instead, sending 129 backpacks to their counterparts in deprived areas of that continent as part of the P5/6 Enterprise and Eco Work project.

The idea was for the pupils - with the help of the school staff - to collect useful basic classroom equipment to fill the packs with to send off to countries such as Malawi and Liberia where even a pencil and a ruler is a prized possession for any child attending school.

Proud of her pupils for collecting and filling so many packs for Africa, teacher Andrea Miller (pictured) commented: “This is a great opportunity for our children to help those less fortunate than themselves.“
