Role models idea is just champion

TOP athletes are to be drafted in to mentor school pupils in Cumbernauld and Kilsyth.

The move comes as part of a new initiative being run by North Lanarkshire Council (NLC) which encourages pupils to pursue a healthy lifestyle.

Known as the Champions in Schools programme, the plan is to establish suitable role models for the youngsters, who then support them to achieve individually set ambitions.

Richard Orr, programme manager at the Winning Scotland Foundation said: “Three years since the launch of Champions in Schools by the foundation, it is another huge boost for the programme that North Lanarkshire Council will be implementing the workshops across all of its secondary schools.

“In so doing, they are giving more of Scotland’s teenage pupils the opportunity to interact with some of Scotland’s top sporting role models and to learn about the importance of adopting a positive attitude to life through goal setting and taking a healthy attitude to nutrition and exercise.”
