Ross pulls his weight for charity

The 24-year-old took to Auldhouse retail park on Saturday to pull the bus on his weight-trained shoulders to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

Ross, from Mount Florida, told The Extra: “I decided to mark one year to the day when I lost my dad John to leukemia.

“I wanted to do something that would not only mark the day in a more positive way, but in a way that would benefit other families who are dealing with cancer.”

The strongman world is relatively new to Ross, as he entered his first contest earlier this year — but he’s training hard for Scotland’s Strongest Man under 90kg, a major event in next year’s calendar.

All that training is benefiting the charity too, as Ross has raised £648 and counting — surpassing his £500 target.

He added: “I wouldn’t be able to do this had it not been for the support of my family and friends, work colleagues and everyone else involved — especially Hailey’s Comet mini bus company for supplying the bus, and City Gym Glasgow for supplying the equipment and for excellent training advice.”

Over in East Renfrewshire, the footballers of tomorrow were suited and booted for a successful charity dinner.

St Cadoc’s Youth Club held its third charity sportsman’s dinner at the Redhurst hotel in Giffnock, compered by comedian Tam Cowan and and attended by ex-referee Kenny Clark, ex-Hibernian player Tony Higgins and SFA performance director Mark Wotte — as well as guest of honour and Celtic legend Billy McNeil MBE.

A total of £20,000 was raised for various charities, including St Andrew’s Hospice, the sick children’s unit in Paisley and Bobath Scotland.

Club chairman Mark Thomson said: “This was a fantastic night. All of the speakers declined to charge a fee in support of their nominated charity which is a fantastic 
gesture.

“Many thanks also to the businesses and individuals who donated fabulous prizes.”
