Row over access to nursery

Residents in Clarkston are set to battle with East Renfrewshire Council over plans for a new family centre and nursery close to Williamwood High.

The proposed site, at Newford Grove, is expected to provide nursery places for 110 children but a row has emerged over access to the site.

Resident Graeme Oswald argues the intended entrance to the new facility is too close to houses and that the existing road is too narrow to accommodate high levels of traffic.

He has presented an alternative, near an existing delivery entrance for the neighbouring high school, to which he hopes will be considered at a planning meeting next month where he will also present a petition of local support.

Mr Oswald says his option would be safer for children playing nearby, reduce congestion and give easier access to the nursery, as well as more car parking and improved access to the recreation ground.

He told the Extra: “We are simply looking for the council to have a balanced and considered approach to this project”.

Busby Community Council also support the alternative plan and MSP Jackson Carlaw has weighed in, saying: “All that they are asking is for ERC look at every available option.”
