Royal honours for stalwart volunteers

East Renfrewshire stalwarts Eleanor Bremner and Ren McGuire have been honoured by the Queen for services to their community.

The ladies now hold East Ren’s second and third British Empire Medals since the honour was reintroduced in 2012 for the Diamond Jubilee.

Both were presented with their awards by Mr Guy Clark, lord lieutenant for Renfrewshire, who said he did so ‘with great pleasure’. He said: “It was the greatest honour to present these two ladies with their richly deserved awards.

“I very much hope a number of additional winners will also be identified and suitably rewarded in future.”

Newton Mearns resident Mrs Bremner was awarded for her considerable contribution to Macmillan Cancer Support, having joined the Glasgow 84 Committee fundraising group in 1987 and chaired it for years. The group has raised more than £2 million for the cancer charity to date.

Mr Clark said: “The drive and energy of Mrs Bremner has made a major contribution to all aspects of the committee’s work, in particular the annual art exhibition, which has raised more than £100,000 each year.”

Mrs McGuire, from Barrhead, received her medal for her tireless efforts on behalf of the vulnerable.

Since 1986, the activist has been at the forefront of a wide range of community initiatives, including youth activities and getting older people along to inclusive events.

Mr Clark added that Rena “has made the community a better place to be”.

The lord lieutenant is now encouraging residents to nominate more deserving recipients for national honours — to find out more, call 577 8388.
