Safety fears for Lanark’s bowling green on Castlehill eare well founded

ACCUSATIONS that the future of one of Lanark’s oldest clubs has been needlessly put at risk have been rejected by South Lanarkshire Council.

For over two years play at Lanark Thistle Bowling Club has been restricted after part of the historic Castlehill on which it stands gave way in a landslip.

Some fear that the doubts over safety could spell the end for the club, founded 250 years ago.

Since the slippage, members have been waiting anxiously for South Lanarkshire Council to complete engineering studies and consultations with the likes of Historic Scotland to get restoration work underway and a full green re-opened.

In recent months there has been a growing feeling within the club that restrictions imposed by part of the green being `out of bounds’ on safety grounds are unneccessary and the restoration of the hill below the club not that vital.

But the council has released an engineer’s report outlining the danger.
