Safety first for prize winner Grace

Children from 32 primary schools took part in the challenge to dream up a drawing and slogan to improve road safety - organised by East Dunbartonshire Council.

P1 pupil Grace Neil Grace won with her slogan ‘Be Smart, Cross Safely’ accompanied by an illustration showing a brightly coloured car and lorry stopping at traffic lights, with the crossing lights at green.

Grace’s design will now feature on thousands of calendars that will be distributed across East Dunbartonshire to remind people of the very important road safety message.

Grace received £70 and a trophy that will go on display at her school, while runners-up received cash prizes and certificates.

Councillor Ashay Ghai, who met Grace at the prize-giving, said: “Every year the popularity of the competition increases and the standard gets higher.

“Again the judging was difficult, however, there can be only one winner and Grace’s illustration of how to cross the road safely definitely gave the right message and deserves to be the winner.

“I’d like to congratulate Grace and all the others winners this year, they did a brilliant job.

“The new calendar looks fantastic and I hope that family and friends, as well as everyone else that see it, can enjoy it and remember the important message that Grace has managed to capture in her design.”
