The primary sevens followed a timetable and were introduced to new subjects that they perhaps had not studied before. Senior pupils did a really good job of taking and collecting the primary sevens from their classes. Thank you to them.

The Japanese day run by the Japanese Club on Thursday afternoon was a great success. Events included Taiko drumming, origami lessons, manga drawing workshops and the biggest silent auction in living memory. Pupils (and staff) also had the chance to try on kimonos and have their photo taken. Everyone agreed it was a great afternoon, but it had a more serious side as all money raised will be sent to help rebuild villages in Japan which were devastated by the recent earthquake and tsunami. Final totals are not in yet, but it is hoped that over £500 has been raised for the Japanese Tsunami Appeal.

There are a limited number of places left on the reward trip to the cinema and bowling. The trip will include a film (to be confirmed the week before) and one game of ten pin bowling at the Showcase leisure park. Total cost is £10. Anyone interested should see Mrs Forrester with money as soon as possible to book a place.

St Maurice’s High

ON Friday, June 3, St Maurice’s said a big Hello to our new S1 pupils. Nearly 200 P7 pupils from our associated primaries came up for their orientation day. Split into classes as they will in August, they were toured round the school by S3 pupils and took part in a number of different subjects. These taster sessions introduced them to Science, Art, Home Economics, Technology and PE. As part of a healthy eating project S3 pupils also gave the P7s the opportunity to buy popcorn. The pupils had a wonderful day and we all look forward to meeting them properly in August.

The unveiling of the art project in the Craiglinn underpass took place last Tuesday. The unveiling was the culmination of a year long project for pupils from our Art department who worked with designers from Bigg Design and Zero Waste to brighten up the underpass. The pupils Ciaran Scott, Declyn Emslie, Kaitlyn Doherty, Kyle Toye and Anthony Mackenzie, spent half a year planning the design before sending it to the Council. The project then moved into the second stage where the design was made reality and painted on to the walls and the lightening was installed. The lightening has been designed to reflect the times of day, with lights changing through a series of colours from dusk till dawn. Councillors Bob Chadha and Barry McCulloch, as well as members of staff from North Lanarkshire Council, joined the pupils, head teacher Mr Byrne, Hamish Bigg of Bigg Designs and Roy Shearer from Zero Waste for the opening ceremony.
