School pupil assaulted during lunch hour

A Brannock High pupil was attacked during his lunch hour yesterday (Tuesday).

The 16-year-old was assaulted in the Newarthill school at around 1.10pm by two boys wielding a metal pole.

A family member took the teenager to Wishaw General Hospital for treatment and the police have arrested a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Around 1.10pm police and emergency services responded to a report of a 16-year-old boy at a school in Loanhead Road, Newarthill, having been assaulted by two boys.

“The 16-year-old was taken to Wishaw General Hospital by a family member where he is receiving treatment for his injury, which is not life threatening.

“A 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy have been arrested in connection with the incident and have now been released.

“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal and the Scottish Children’s Reporter administration.”

North Lanarkshire Council confirmed the two suspects were not pupils at the school.

A spokesman said: “An incident took place where two teenagers, who are not associated with the school, entered the building and assaulted one of our pupils.

“School staff attended to the pupil and provided him with first aid. We contacted the police and ambulance service who were both quickly on the scene.”
