Scottish Ballet summer school for talented youngsters

Young dancers, aged seven to 12 years old, will find themselves immersed in the magical world of the sugar plum fairy, come face-to-face with curious wild sylphs and even transport themselves with Shakespeare’s most famous star-crossed lovers.

Scottish Ballet education officer, Miriam Early, said: “There will be costumes and props, and we’ll be working with live music and ballerina Megan Woods – who has previously danced with Scottish Ballet.

“We will also explore how to create fantastical landscapes – such as the spooky forests in Hansel & Gretel, and Matthew Bourne’s Highland Fling, and become characters such as the witch and the sandman. There will even be workshops on recreating passion and conflict and fight scenes based on Scottish Ballet’s Romeo & Juliet.

“Our Summer School is a fantastic opportunity to spend time under the wing of the national dance company’s education team.

“Not only will it be a lot of fun playing games and creating movement inspired by each ballet, but our young dancers will also benefit greatly in both their ballet and contemporary dance technique; learn some of the company repertoire and work on skills such as musicality, improvisation, characterisation and performance skills.”

The Summer School runs from Tuesday, July 15 to Friday 18 (Grades 1 & 2 from 10.30am – 12.30pm, Grades 3 & 4 from 1.30pm – 3.30pm) each four-day session costs £80 and can be booked online at www.scottishballet.co.uk.
