Scottish first for Croy Miners’ Welfare Society

For a start, the organisation has become the first charitable society of its kind in Scotland to use the process of incorporation to become a company limited by guarantee.

That greatly widens the possibilities of what initiatives and events can be run from there, as all volunteers’ private assets are now fully protected.

Meanwhile, in a bid to generate income and increase the usage of the Nethercroy Road centre, a cafe serving hot food has been launched and the bar area is to be branded and opened to the general public.

At the charity’s AGM, held on September 17, it was also agreed that the centre itself should be re-named to make it more commercially appealing.

Centre development manager Catherine Martin said: “The idea behind it all is to allow us to draw in more business opportunities. We’ve got to a stage now that, ultimately, no charity can remain on grant funding alone.”
