The 40th Stepps Scouts will celebrate the milestone anniversary next year.

A meeting of interested parties took place in June 1914 in Stepps to discuss the possibility of forming a local scout troop.

This was agreed and a troop was formed the same month. A Cub group was later formed in 1917.

The troop first met in a hall below 101/103 Edward Place, before moving to a large motor garage on the opposite side of Cumbernauld Road around 1918, then to its present site in Cardowan Drive in 1937.

Celebratory events planned for next year include a group camp in Auchengillan, a parents’ dance/ceilidh and a reception for all passed and present Scouts and invited guests on June 21.

There are also plans to build a brick outdoor BBQ, and housebuilders Taylor Wimpey are helping to patch the leaking Scout hall roof.

Meanwhile, getting into the festive spirit, the 40th Stepps Scouts are holding a Christmas Eve torch light procession.

Scout leader Euan Alexander said: “Next year will be a busy year for us all. From group camps to various open events for current and passed members to get involved in.

“It will be a great opportunity to celebrate 100 years of Scouting in the Stepps community.”
