“When you are driving either for work or socially you can greatly help other road users seeing you by ensuring you switch your lights on, and not just when it’s dark.

“It’s can be just as difficult to see at dusk or in heavy rain so switch your lights on,” said Inspector Faulds.

“Remember, with the change in weather drive at a speed that’s appropriate for the circumstances – this means you may drive slower than the posted speed limit.”

And he added: “Pedestrians also have an important part to play in road safety.

“As the temperatures drop, you’ll be wrapping up warm – this additional clothing can reduce vision or hearing so take extra care when crossing the road.

“Think about what you are wearing - dark-coloured clothing makes it hard for drivers to see you so wear something light coloured. Help the motorist see you.”
