See out the auld year at Biggar and Carnwath fires
The huge pile of wood in front of the Corn Exchange has been growing steadily, and great-grandmother Chris Smith will light Biggar’s historic bonfire at 9.30pm on Hogmanay, tonight, after the torchlight procession up through the town.
“It is a great honour,” said Chris, who turns 88 in January. She is still better known in Biggar as Chris Paul, whose family had the fishmonger and greengrocers in High Street for over 60 years.
