Sensory garden in Market Square, Carluke

THE new Carluke sensory garden will be completed on schedule - ready for this year's Carluke Gala Day.

Volunteers from Clydesdale Community Initiative have been hard at work in the past few months landscaping and constructing dry stane dyking, which will make up the sensory garden.

And with the landscaping work set to be completed by the end of May the project is now in its final stages.

Clydesdale Community Initiative manager Niall McShannon is delighted with the contribution the volunteers have made and believes the new skills they have learned will help them move into employment.

He said: "The project has been a really good opportunity for those involved to make a contribution to the community.

"We've got five people from Carluke and a further 25 people across Clydesdale helping us.

"They have learned a variety of new skills including land-scaping, dyking, paving and woodcraft which will give them new skills to take into the labour market.

"Almost everything will be finished by the end of May with the remaining touches being carried out in June. All of the landscaping will be completed by the end of this month."

Set-up thanks to the Carluke Development Trust, the garden contains features ideally suited to the needs of children with special needs.

These include scented plants, sculptures, water features designed to make sound and textured touch-pads.
