Service will mark Cumbernauld mining disaster anniversary

A SHORT service will be held at the Condorrat Memorial Wall on Sunday, September 18 to mark the Auchengiech disaster.

On Friday, September 18, 1959, 47 men lost their lives in the worst pit disaster in Scottish history, leaving scores of children and families devastated and Scottish coal mining scared for ever.

Six of the men who died that morning were from Condorrat.

The Condorrat Residents and Tenants Association, in combination with members of the local community, completed a memorial wall this year, which now stands proudly outside the Condorrat library, as a tribute to the 1820 Scottish Radicals, the war dead and the men who died in the disaster.

A short service will be held this weekend to remember those who lost their lives that fateful day.

John Burke from Condorrat Residents and Tenants Association said: “On behalf of the Memorial Committee we are asking people to join us on Sunday at the wall in order to commemorate the miners who lost their lives in the pit disaster.

“A short service will be held at 11am until roughly 11.45am. A wreath will be laid and a few prayers will be said.

“We will then be heading to the Auchengeich service which starts at 1pm.

“All are welcome.”
