Share your memories of how steel shaped Lanarkshire

Culture NL is looking for people whose lives were shaped by the steel industry to share their memories for a new exhibition.

The Big Mill will take place at North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre from September 3-November 12.

Industrial history curator Justin Parkes said: “Discovery of how to shape metal was one of the most important leaps forward in human history.

“During the industrial era iron and steel making grew on an unprecedented scale, celebrated in a famous 1963 film about Ravenscraig and Gartcosh Steel Works, ‘The Big Mill’.

“Come and learn about how steel is made and shaped, hear the stories of the people who braved the dangers and searing heat of the steel mill.”

Justin is looking to talk to anyone who worked in steel production in Lanarkshire as well as those who lived and worked in the shadow of the mills.

He said: “We are looking for people who can tell us about their working lives in the Lanarkshire steel industry.

“Whether you were an apprentice, drove an HGV or loco, worked in the slabbing or strip mill or at the coking ovens we would like to share your memories.

“In addition we’d also enjoy hearing from anyone who lived or worked in the shadow of Ravenscraig and receive recollections of how it influenced every day life.”
