Shawlands school to steal the show

The youngsters have been working with festival musicians since November as part of a National Theatre of Scotland project — and now, they’re taking to the stage to show off their emerging talents.

Singer-songwriter Findlay Napier, fiddler Celine Donaghue and flute player Peter Webster have encouraged the children to create new songs for the concert, and their masterpieces will be showcased with two performances on Thursday, at 1.30pm and again at 7pm.

Shawlands primary depute head teacher Alison McGill told The Extra: “It has been a real privilege to be involved in this project.

“The children have found the whole process enriching, from the initial visit to Pollok House where they were encouraged to draw inspiration from their surroundings, to the music workshops in the school.

“Findlay, Celine and Peter have captivated the children and introduced them to a whole new world of music, and the compositions they have created together are superb — it’s all very exciting”.

The southside concert — part of the city-wide Celtic Connections festival — will also feature international artists Eric Robinson, Lukas Pool, Grant McFarlane and Euan Smillie, as well as the Atlantic Seaway project – a collaboration between Scottish and American universities.

The event is free, and Shawlands parents are welcome along to Pollok House to see the show.
