“Shy” Ross says volunteering has a lot to offer

Cumbernauld man Ross Cowan has clocked up 660 hours helping others as a volunteer in just two years – and wants others to follow his example.

Ross, 18, was a previously shy teenager who now addresses major gatherings and plays a key role in promoting the national organisation Young Scot.

He said: “Volunteering with Young Scot has been so valuable in helping me develop my organisational and personal skills.

“Before I began volunteering I was very shy and didn’t enjoy speaking to people.

“I’ve now done presentations in front of hundreds of people at schools and regularly interact with people at events and within community groups.”

He added: “I was also given the chance to be a judge at the 2015 Young Scot Awards in April, and it was an amazing feeling to be involved in such an important event recognising the incredible achievements of young people in Scotland.

“I finished up at school this year and have a great job opportunity lined up.

“I would say that volunteering has really given me the confidence to go after this job and the experience looks great on my CV.

“I would strongly encourage all young people to get into volunteering, as it’s a great way to learn valuable employment skills and can really help you grow as a person.”

Helen Harper from Volunteer Scotland says new figures that show high numbers of young adults getting involved in volunteering is a positive reflection on young Scots.

“It is hugely encouraging to see so many 11 to 18 year olds giving up their time to help others,” said Helen.

“Whether it is assisting at a sports club or spending time with the residents of a local care home, the survey has shown a variety of areas of interest for young volunteers, from sport and social clubs to political groups, care for the elderly and animal welfare.”

According to a new survey Just ten per cent reckon volunteering is “boring”, which is a massive improvement from 2009, when almost 20% of 11 to 16 year olds held this view.

Helen added: “The survey shows what a diverse group young people are and how vastly their tastes and choices differ, not just between genders but also between ages.”
