Simon's saluted

A LOCAL soldier has been honoured with a 'best recruit' award following the completion of the first stage of his army training.

Simon Clark from Kilsyth, received the best recruit in the Rhine Platoon accolade from Parade Inspecting Officer, the Adjutant General, Lieutenant General Mark Mans, CBE, at the training regiment's passing out parade in Bassingbourn.

The former St Maurice's High School pupil was watched during the event by proud parents Stephen and Margaret Clark, and younger brother Peter (16).

Simon, who turned 21 on Monday, is a soldier in the Royal Engineers Regiment and having completed phase one army training he is now undertaking phase two, which includes a combat engineer course at the Royal School of Military Engineering (RSME) in Surrey.

He follows in elder brother Martin's footsteps. Martin is now a Lance Corporal in the 54 Commando BRF, Royal Engineers Regiment and is currently serving in Germany, having spent seven months deployed in Afghanistan in 2008 to 2009.
