Singing’s good for the brain

A charity which uses singing as a memory tool has hit the high notes with a funding lifeline boost of
£1,500.

Singing for the Brain will use the cash injection to buy musical instruments and fund transport.

The money was donated by The Richmond Fellowship’s Participatory Funding.

A spokesman said: “The cash boost will ensure the group can keep older East Ren folk singing for the foreseeable future.”

He explained the relationship between singing classic chart hits and activating memories in people with dementia, saying: “Singing for the Brain brings people living with dementia together in a friendly and stimulating environment to sing-along to a wide variety of music from old Scottish songs such as the Bonnie Banks through to the Beatles and Neil Diamond.

“The activities help to build on participants’ preserved memory for song and music in the brain.”

Sessions run every Wednesday at the Kirkton Service in Barrhead.
