Six-year-old’s bid to save the rainforest

Mirin (6) may not be cycling all the way to the Amazon, but she is tackling a gruelling 13 mile trip from Fenwick to Giffnock on May 25, all in aid of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

The Our Lady of the Missions Primary pupil became passionate about the rainforest after studying the topic at school.

Her JustGiving page reads: “I learned that the rainforst has a forest floor, understory, canopy and emergent layers and is really important for keeping the world’s air clean.

“I was sad because people are cutting all the trees down to make money because they want to be rich.

“I asked my dad how I could stop people cutting down the rainforest and we decided on a sponsored bike ride because I love cycling.

“I will be training hard before my big cycle.”

Dad Mark — who’ll be joining the amibitious youngster on the charity cycle — told The Extra: “Mirin was so taken that she began asking what she could do to help.

“We spoke about recycling and environmentally friendly actions we could take around the house.

“She was, however, adamant that she wanted to do more so we suggested that she could try and raise some money.”

The big cycle might be over a week away, but Mirin has already smashed her initial target of £100, with £170 in donations to date.
