Smyllum crime summit is total flop

HAVE decent folk living in one beleaguered corner of Lanark now given up all hope of ever improving their area?

That is the fear of those striving to restore the once glowing reputation of Lanark’s now deeply troubled Smyllum estate, recently the scene of an alleged murder.

Their dreams of a new beginning were dashed when crunch ‘summit’ meetings, aimed at kick-starting the local backlash against crime and anti-social behaviour, attracted just THREE residents.

And even that trio were all leading members of the organisation dedicated to solving the area’s problems, the Smyllum Tenants and Residents (STAR) group.

And it was STAR which came to the Gazette this week to express its hurt and “astonishment” that so few in the ordinary community could be bothered to turn up for either of the gatherings, hosted by the police at South Lanarkshire Council’s South Vennel headquarters consecutively on February 15 and 16.
