Smyllum orphanage boy Adam Taggart learns about his family

THE first time Adam Taggart tried to commit suicide he was just seven years old. That was how bad life was for him in a Lanark orphanage, a nightmare world closed off from the rest of a town blissfully ignorant of such childhood misery existing on its doorstep.

The Gazette was surprised and touched by our readers’ reaction when, two weeks ago, we published how the now middle-aged Adam was making a final effort to discover his true identity.

His origins were lost or hidden from him since he was handed into care as a four-day-old baby, eventually ending up in Lanark’s Smyllum Orphanage.
