Society of Saint Vincent de Paul celebrates 150 years

MEMBERS of the Barrhead-based Society of St Vincent De Paul celebrated a 150th anniversary recently with a civic reception hosted by East Renfrewshire council.

Provost Alastair Carmichael and councillors Danny Devlin, Tommy Reilly, Kenny Hay and Charlie Gilbert welcomed members of the local clergy to the celebration at St John’s church hall.

The Christian society is presided over by former East Ren councillor Danny Collins, and is thought to be one of the oldest of its kind in Britain.

The aim is to help community members from all walks of life — regardless of religion — who find themselves in poverty, or in need of practical assistance.

The Barrhead group will also celebrate the milestone anniversary by publishing a booklet on its history.
