Sounding the warning bells for festive shoppers

Police Scotland and East Dunbartonshire Council have joined forces to run the scheme, aiming to keep people safe during the festive period.

The bells can be attached to purses, wallets and handbags to alert the owner to any potential theft while they are doing their Christmas shopping. The sound of the bells can also help deter potential offenders.

Chief Inspector Craig Smith said: “Working with East Dunbartonshire Council’s Community Protection Team we will focus on keeping the Christmas shopping experience safe and as enjoyable as possible for everyone visiting and working in the area.

“We will also use this time of the year to remind everyone about basic safety advise that will reduce the risk of them becoming a victim of crime.”

Here are some simple preventative measures to deter criminals from targeting you:

n Use cash machines in well lit, non-secluded areas and stay alert. Check the machine hasn’t been tampered with and hide your PIN. Be aware of who is behind you and keep you cash hidden.

n Ensure your bag is closed and your purse or wallet is not easily accessible.

n If you’re driving to the shops park in a busy well lit area. Don’t leave any shopping or presents in view in the car and don’t leave them there for any longer than you have to.

n Keep your shopping bags in your view at all times, you might not realise the combined value of all your purchases.
