South Lanarkshire Council stops chick incubator scheme

THE organiser of a school hatching project has been left as sick as a parrot.

For Jimmy Delaney claims South Lanarkshire Council chiefs disrupted his popular Class-IC Chicks initiative by refusing to give St Mary's Primary School in Lanark an incubator for hatching hen and quail chicks.

Jimmy (55), a fishery bird researcher at the Lesmahagow-based voluntary group Nethan Valley Angling Association — which supports animal welfare — has run several successful school visits allowing pupils to see eggs hatching in an incubator.

And he thinks that blocking the project on animal welfare grounds is a "bird-brained" decision by the council.

"I will fight the council all the way on this," Jimmy said.

"I hope the council doesn't end up with yolk on its face."

A spokesperson for South Lanarkshire Council responded to Jimmy's concerns by saying: "We are working with Mr Delaney to identify what safeguards should be implemented to ensure that this type of activity takes place in a safe environment.

"We hope that, once these safeguards have been agreed, the

project will be able to continue."
