South Lanarkshire crime rates at lowest level for 10 years

DESPITE claims that the crime rate is at its lowest level for years, there are still on average FIVE violent assaults a day in Clydesdale.

This figure was revealed in the latest detailed crime figures released by Strathclyde Police QC sub-division, our local force.

The consolation to the public is that upwards of three out of the four people responsible for these attacks are arrested.

The figures released relate to the last three months of 2009.

The police also provided figures on just how many of their recently-created Community Officers are on the front line in local streets.

In Carluke there is now a force of six officers, in Lanark four with a further four in Lesmahagow and Biggar, the latter with an extra

sergeant in charge.

Meanwhile, South Lanarkshire Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Love, was "pleased" to report on figures for the area for 2009/10 which showed "significant reductions'' in a number of crimes and offences. This resulted in the lowest crime level in over ten years.

He said: "Violent crime, which causes the greatest fear in communities, has hit its lowest level in over ten years. Our detection rate for violence is at its highest level ever.

"There is still much to do to make South Lanarkshire a safer place but I am pleased with the progress which has been made."
