South Lanarkshire grave yard signs row

A RURAL community group is challenging South Lanarkshire Council over its taste, after the council erected a huge blue and yellow sign in an ancient country churchyard.

For months Black Mount Community Council has been asking South Lanarkshire to do something about the sign, in its corporate livery, at Dunsyre Church, which is a listed building.

"It's a monstrous thing," said community council secretary Barry Rosindale.

"Is it necessary to put a sign in front of a Grade Two listed building where the cemetery is no longer available for burials, other than the interment of ashes in family plots?"

Barry pointed to the sign at St John's Kirk in Symington which, although still in the bright blue and yellow colours, was small by comparison.

However, the council said it would be putting up these signs in all cemeteries, including St John's Kirk.

"South Lanarkshire Council's cemeteries have the large signs in the council's corporate colours with the management rules and other details on display," said a spokeswoman.

"There are a few of the small signs which were installed just after re-organisation which display the cemetery name alone and it is planned to replace those too with the standard signs."
