On Tuesday night, water supply to Shawlands, Pollokshields, Newlands, Mount Florida and beyond was cut off as a result of a five metre wide hole in the water main.

A Scottish Water spokesman said: “As well as damage to the water mains, the road at Bridge Street has been affected and repairs will be carried out as soon as possible. There has also been some localised flooding.

On Twitter Ian McMillan (@ianmcmillan) said: “I didn’t have any water for a few hours. I was considering driving to Asda in Toryglen so I could (use the facilities).”

Residents were allowed back into their home at around 1.30am.
