The schools affected by the proposal, agreed today at city chambers, are Merrylee, Croftfoot, Battlefield and Mount Florida primaries and King’s Park, Hillpark and Shawlands secondaries.

The council points to a growth in population, particularly in the southside of the city, as a result of housing developments.

Demand for Merrylee Primary in particular is said to be high, prompting calls for redrawn catchment areas.

Councillor Stephen Curran, executive member for education and young people, said: “For a variety of reasons, the number of families with young children in the current Merrylee catchment area has increased well beyond forecasts back in 2009.

“The school is very popular in the area — for catchment and placing request children.

“However, we now have to look at capacity and the knock on effects on the neighbouring primary schools and associated secondary schools.”

The consultation begins on October 20, and all parents and interested parties are invited to submit their responses via the Glasgow City Council website.
