Spaceman Sam’s inspired by uncle

His envisaged a sun-reflecting satellite that uses concave mirrors to redirect the sunshine to Scotland to decrease the risk of MS Multiple Sclerosis, which is related to a lack of vitamin D, a benefit of moderate exposure to the sun’s rays.

He came up with this idea as his uncle has MS and he wanted to find a way to tackle this neurological condition.

Sam said: “I found the talks by professor Jim McDonald [Vice Chancellor University of Strathclyde] and Bryan Buchan [CEO Scottish Engineering] very inspiring as the engineers told us to follow our dreams.

“I now really want to be a space engineer and this experience has taught me that, if you really want to do something, then you should just set your mind to it and work hard to achieve it”.

Sam attended an awards ceremony recently at Barony Halls and was joined by previous Netherlee winners Leo Foulds and Kirstie MacNaughton.

Principal teacher Lynn Sweeney said: “We are all very proud of Sam and his achievement, here at Netherlee.”
