IT’S a new dawn for East Dunbartonshire Council as it prepares to cut the ribbon on its new HQ.

The move from Tom Johnston House to Southbank Marina will save the local authority around £350,000 a year.

It’s part of a shake-up of council properties. However, Tom Johnston House is still not up for sale.

The new civic and corporate HQ will be open to members of the public attending council meetings or visiting their local councillor.

Local ‘community hubs’ are being created so residents can get information and make payments for a range of council services.

Council leader Rhondda Geekie and Provost Una Walker will officially open the new marina premises on Monday, August 13.

Councillor Geekie said: “The marina move and the creation of the community hub in Kirkintilloch forms part of our work to streamline the operating costs of our council buildings and deliver more efficient services.

“The one off investments in these projects allows us to generate year on year savings, which help protect frontline services.”

The new Kirkintilloch Community Hub opens on the ground floor of William Patrick Library on Monday, August 27.

The £500,000 project has sparked a public outcry, with library users concerned it could impact on the service.

Community hubs will become a first-stop-shop, enabling residents to do everything from paying bills to finding out about the latest events in the area. The Kirkintilloch facility will be the first hub opened in East Dunbartonshire.

Others will also be opened in Bishopbriggs, Lennoxtown, Bearsden and Milngavie.

The relocation savings are in addition to budget savings of £30million that the council has already had to make since 2008/09.

Proposals for Tom Johnston House are currently under discussion.

Members of the public will be able to get information and make payments for council services by either calling the council’s contact centre on 0300 123 4510 or visiting Tom Johnston House until August 24.
