Spring fling returns to Rouken Glen

Fingers will be crossed that the weather improves for the council-run festival on April 20 – otherwise those strong men and women will be rather chilly in their kilts.

But whether the sun rear its head or not, the programme is packed – including the introduction of an international women’s highland challenge, complete with strength challenges.

Eight international female athletes – including World’s Strongest Woman runner-up Anett ven der Weppen, from Germany – will compete in the caber toss, hammer throw, shot putt and more.

But the boys won’t be left out, with highland stars returning to the park – including last year’s champion, former Williamwood pupil and East Ren resident Gregor Edmunds, who holds titles for World Highland Games champion and Braemar champion.

Gregor will be joined by Scottish and English under 23 shot putt champion Daniel Carlin, ensuring there’s stiff competition on the day.

Last year’s games attracted 15,000 spectators – and for those of us without the muscle, there are still plenty of family events to enjoy.

The day’s activities include the ever-popular women’s welly-throwing contest, children’s entertainment, farmers market, historical re-enactment and arts and crafts fair.

Visitors will also be entertained by traditional pipe bands and highland dancing competitions, and highland games chieftain, provost Alastair Carmichael, has promised another “terrific spectacle”.

He continued: “The event offers something for everyone, and both competitors and spectators are sure to have a fantastic time.

“The games are a very important part of our events calendar and Rouken Glen park is the perfect venue for them.”

So fingers crossed for some sunshine on Saturday, April 20, as the games kick off at noon – entry is free of charge.
