St Ninian’s dancers step up for Mela festival

A group of 15 pupils from St Ninian’s High School in Kirkintilloch delivered a professionally choreographed performance on the main stage at the recent Glasgow Mela festiva.

Glasgow Mela is an annual event which takes place in the city’s Kelvingrove Park with music, dance, multi-cultural food and stalls.

The all-girl dance group rehearsed for over two months with a professional Bollywood dancer from India in preparation for the event. They had costumes designed and shipped in from India to add an authentic touch to their performance.

The St Ninian’s troupe was part of a group of five schools that performed to an enthusiastic crowd.

Glasgow Mela is Europe’s longest running free multi-cultural event and last year’s festival attracted a record 35,000 people.

Councillor Eric Gotts, Convener of Education at East Dunbartonshire Council, said: “This was a tremendous opportunity for the pupils to experience performing in front of a live audience.

“It not only boosts their confidence and their performing skills but it also encourages then to embrace cultural diversity. Well done to girls on a great performance.”
