The teenager claimed he carried out the attack after being taunted on Facebook.

The victim spent two days in hospital after the assault in the Muirhouse area.

His attacker, aged 16, was sentenced at Hamilton Sheriff Court. He admitted assaulting the boy to his injury and permanent disfigurement on November 2 and breaching a night curfew 11 days later.

The boy was stabbed in the abdomen. The wound became infected and he developed a fever, but he responded well to antibiotics and made a full recovery.

The accused, who is still just 16, cannot be named because of his age. He has appeared in court on other matters since the stabbing.

Imran Bashir, prosecuting, said the schoolboy thought he had been punched by the older youth, but then saw blood and realised he had been stabbed. Friends and a nearby householder helped him before he was taken to hospital for treatment to a 2cm deep wound.

Defence agent Diarmid Bruce claimed his client had been attacked previously. This was followed by Facebook messages which he held the boy responsible for.

He called the boy over when he saw him and, unfortunately, resorted to violence.

After studying background reports, Sheriff Shiona Waldron sent the youth to a young offenders’ institution for one year, cutting the sentence from 16 months because of his guilty plea.
