Stay safe by planning ahead

Emergency services are gearing up for Hogmanay celebrations across Glasgow and East Renfrewshire.

The message from community cops is to enjoy yourself, but plan ahead.

Inspector Alan Dickson, of Giffnock police station, said that an enhanced police presence will be out and about on the streets of Glasgow and East Ren. He told The Extra: “The message from us is about partygoers keeping themselves safe.

“Go out and enjoy yourself but please, have a plan. Watch your drinks, keep bags by your side and make sure you know how you’re getting home.”

Accident and emergency departments are preparing for a busy new year’s eve, and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is reminding people that prevention is the best plan of action.

A spokesman said: “It should be a happy and enjoyable time, but it can also be a time when you put yourself at risk of serious harm by drinking too much and not paying attention to your safety.

“Alcohol and the cold are a dangerous combination as — contrary to popular belief — going out into the fresh air does not sober you up.

“Be aware of your drinking and make sure everyone gets home safely for a safe and happy start to 2015.”
