Forty-one-year-old Stephen Chalmers formerly worked as a manager in a major care charity. He recognised an opportunity and founded his own business venture, Altogether Travel, Scotland’s only company specialising in supported travel.

“I realised that many people, especially older people, can go years or decades without going on holiday. They lose their confidence and no longer feel able to travel,” said the married father of two.

The firm provides services for older adults, people with various disabilities and people with mental health issues or dementia. Their travel escorts give carers respite, support group excursions or accompany family holidays.

The company has now been chosen as one of 50 semifinalists in The Pitch 2013, a competition designed to help selected new companies establish themselves. On September 25 Stephen will be putting forward a pitch in the hope of becoming one of five companies chosen to share £275,000.
