Still time to derail new Clydesdale train timetable

A CALL has gone out for the train-users of Lanark and Carluke to stage a mass-revolt against the unpopular new Glasgow timetable which came into effect on Sunday.

As reported in the Gazette, many did not realise until last month the full implications of the changes first announced by Scotrail in the summer.

Only when a full copy of the new timetable was available was it realised that Lanark and Carluke were to lose their hourly direct Hamilton train service and the re-routing off the Low Level line to the Glasgow Central surface line meant no more services to Rutherglen, Argyle Street or the Exhibition Centre.

Now, with the new services getting underway this week, there has been a flurry of activity among politicians of nearly every party in Clydesdale, calling for the issue to be looked at again and asking questions about the amount of public cionsultations - if any - before the changes were decided.

By coincidence, ScotRail didn’t win any fans at the weekend even as the changes got underway.

On Saturday, the second last major shopping day before Christmas, scores of irate Carluke and Lanark shoppers were temporarily stranded in the city after a serious line fault at Rutherglen.

The very next day saw yet another cancellation late in the afternoon, the public address system blaming “staffing difficulties” for what turned out to be a long and ardous trip home to Clydesdale for already footsore and stressed-out shoppers.
