Storm batters Clydesdale

Abington, Carnwath, Carstairs, Crawford, Crawfordjohn, Walston, Wiston, Leadhills, Underbank and Kirkfieldbank, Douglas and Rigside Primaries were all closed at some point during the morning, mostly due to power shortages.

All train journeys across the country were cancelled early in the morning while there were a series of road closures including the A73 between Lanark and Biggar and the A70 at Ravenstruther.

The M74 was also closed in both directions in the morning following accidents as drivers struggled with the conditions.

As the winds died down, the next challenge was clearing up the mess which included falling trees, roof slates and other debris.

Clydesdale Chief Inspector David Walker admitted that it had been a busy morning for his officers and urged drivers to be wary of debris and of impending snow and ice, which was set to hit Clydesdale today (Thursday) and Friday.

Chief Inspector Walker also advised all motorists to check the Traffic Scotland website for any road closures before travelling.
