Streets ahead in jobs search

Four special football and employability academies, and a dance fitness academy have been set up at Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre by UK charity Street League.

Youth and Community Coach Scott Smith told the Herald: “We have 13 young people aged between 16 and 24 currently on our programme.

“They are taking part in daily football and sports sessions as well as employability workshops and job-searching sessions.”

Last week they organised a community event at Hillhead Primary School - part of a programme they have teamed up with East Dunbartonshire Council to deliver.

Scott added: “We now deliver programmes in 15 local authorities in Scotland.

“Our academies deliver qualifications to young people in a fun and interactive environment, designed for those who did not enjoy the classroom at school.

“We use the sport not just to improve the mental and physical wellbeing of our participants, but also to reinforce key employability skills such as communication, team work and motivation.

“Between 2014 and 2015, 1,044 Street League participants in Scotland progressed into employment, education or training.

“We believe in the power of sport to enable people to achieve their full potential – sport is a universal language.

“We believe school is not a one-size-fits-all approach, and you can find your own success in many different ways.

“Sport teaches teamwork, leadership, discipline and competitive spirit – not only beneficial on the pitch but also essential for world of work.”
