Superb turnout for Lanark business meeting

THERE was an overwhelming response to the call that went out to rally Lanark’s shops and businesses to the rescue of the town.

“I was not expecting this,” Gary Winning, manager of the Clydesdale Inn, said on Monday as he surveyed the crowded upstairs room.

It was so full that many had to stand and latecomers were falling out the doors.

A small group of business representatives who organised the meeting had expected only a handful of people but around 80 – from up to 50 businesses – turned up.

And the emphasis from the outset was on everyone working together to get Lanark back on its feet.

Douglas Macmillan from Jack’s, chairing the meeting, explained that the small group had been working behind the scenes but they wanted to know if they would have the support of the town before they went any further - and the support was resounding.

Pauline Mathieson from WH Smith got a round of applause after stating: “We are in a dire state in the High Street” and calling on everyone to work together to help Lanark rather than follow individual agendas.
