Supermarket giant ready to lodge detailed plans for Bishopbriggs

A NEW superstore could be set to take a major step forward closer to reality.

Bishopbriggs Town Team says Morrisons intends to lodge a planning application with East Dunbartonshire Council in July for its new store on the former Bishopbriggs High School site.

The plans received a mixed reaction from residents when they were displayed at a public exhibition in the town last month.

Bishopbriggs Town Team was set up last year amid concerns raised by members of the community about Morrisons’ initial plans for the town centre development.

The town team wants the council’s planning board to extend the consultation period for the Morrisons application.

And it has called for the plans to be put on display publicly once they have been submitted so residents get a chance to have their say.

A spokesperson for the town team said: “We don’t know what is going to be in the plans. The public exhibition last month left us with more questions than answers, because a lot of what was on display was not on land owned by Morrisons.”

The spokesperson added: “As soon as the plans go in we will be asking for them to be displayed in a public space so people know what they are and what they are being asked to comment on.

“Comments that have been put into Morrisons will not be counted by the council, so it’s important people make their representations to the planning department once the application is submitted.”

Plans displayed by Morrisons last month included a 60,000sq ft store, a petrol station, a community hub, a medical centre and a civic space. The supermarket chain bought the former Bishopbriggs High School site from Muse Developments in December 2010.

Thomas Glen, head of development and enterprise at the council, said: “Morrisons held a public exhibition on May 30 as part of the pre-application consultation on their draft masterplan for the Bishopbriggs Town Centre site and at that time had invited further comments to be submitted by the public over the following week. We understand that Morrison’s are considering these comments and how they may influence their proposals.

“As yet no planning application has been submitted by Morrisons.

“If and when an application is submitted there will be a statutory minimum of 21 days for representations to be submitted and dependent on the timing of any submission we will speak with Morrisons regarding the period for consultations to ensure that the local community has every opportunity to provide representations on any submitted proposals.”
